The hike to Sella del Diavolo, a place rich in legends, starts near Cala Mosca, at the foot of the promontory. From here, an easy and scenic trail begins, suitable for everyone and ideal even for less experienced hikers. From the very first steps, you will be surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, with the scents of juniper, lentisk, and helichrysum, turning the walk into a true sensory experience.

As you climb, the trail reveals important archaeological remains, including traces of Punic and Roman settlements. Along the way, you will see ancient cisterns, old quarry sites, and coastal defensive towers that tell the story of this area’s strategic importance. During the hike, you will also learn about the local legends and the religious significance of Sella del Diavolo, where an ancient Punic temple dedicated to the goddess Astarte is believed to have once stood.

Once you reach the top of Sella del Diavolo, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama: a 360° view over Poetto Beach, the city of Cagliari, the Molentargius lagoon—home to pink flamingos—and the deep blue waters of the Gulf of Angels.

*Difficulty: Easy. The trail is simple and suitable for all. It follows an uphill path to the viewpoint and requires attention only in a few sections where the rock may be slippery.

The Four Historic Districts of Cagliari

Cagliari is a city that still carries the marks of its past in its streets and buildings. In the 13th century, the Pisans chose this area for its strategic location, building the famous Castello district, which still dominates the hill with a view over the sea. Let’s rediscover the ancient legends of Cagliari through its historic districts—Marina, Castello, Stampace, and Villanova—which still show how the capital of Sardinia was structured long ago.

    The Tuvixeddu Necropolis

On one of Cagliari’s hills lies a unique treasure: the largest Phoenician-Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean, the Tuvixeddu Necropolis. Its name means “small hole,” referring to the thousands of tiny openings covering the limestone rocks of this sacred site. On this hike, you will walk among ancient rock-cut tombs, immersing yourself in a millennia-old history just a short distance from the center of Cagliari.
